Days passed. Days filled with daydreams. Dreaming of those strong arms. Dreaming of those dark eyes that seemed to pierce through her.
Nights passed. Nights filled with nightmares. Of walking into the golden sunset holding the hand of a dark, muscular figure. Thinking of the happiness that lay ahead. Suddenly the heavens open. Fire pours down like rain. Fire and brimstone. The dark figure turns into smoke and disappears without a trace.
Terrible nightmares. Night after night.
Annamma stood by the window looking into the river. Mysterious Pampa with its mysterious ways. Like a shy, young maiden flitting gracefully in search of her lover – the Arabian Sea. Annamma smiled at the comparison she had worked out. She remembered a poem she had learned at school. Was it Shelley? She tried to recollect the lines:
“The fountains mingle with the river
And the river with the ocean,
The winds of heaven mix forever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single
All things by a law divine
In one another’s being mingle –
Why not I with thine?”
She remembered how wonderfully the nun at St.Teresa’s had explained these lines, while the class drank in every word of it, listening with rapt attention. The school grape vine had it that Sister Earnestina had been jilted by a young man in her youth. In retort, she chose to renounce the world. She became a nun. The most beautiful nun at the convent.
Sister Earnestina’s poetry classes were exotic. She poured life into those poems. She made you laugh with the poet; she made you cry with him. She held you hypnotized for hours in a romantic realm. Shelley, Keats and Wordsworth vied with each other to linger longer on those lovely lips. When the class finally ended, it would be a quick–freeze from the quixotic to the mundane.
